The body is well-made. The brush holder has a straight mouth, a slightly constricted waist, and a neatly made jade base. The body is thin and delicate. The exterior is decorated with gold on a blue ground. One side has a square opening with a painting of Su Shi's Night Tour of Red Cliff. The painting depicts a scene of stars and moon, autumn trees and a cold river, with Su Shi, Fo Yin, and Huang Luzhi boating on the river, discussing profound principles, drinking tea, and playing chess. The other side is inscribed with the full text of Su Shi's "Post-Red Cliff Ode" in gold calligraphy.
