This piece is made of jade, with a large shape and uses both openwork and pierced carving techniques. The center of the piece is pierced with a wheel-like object. On one side, several chrysanthemum blossoms bloom, attached to the wheel and climbing upwards. Wheat ears grow among the chrysanthemums, with lush branches and leaves. On the other side are two quails, their eyes bright, bodies plump, feathers smooth, and demeanor relaxed. Several stems of swaying leaves and grass are present. The bird's leisure, the flower's fragrance and beauty, and the leaves' sparse yet supple nature are all vividly and realistically depicted. The characters “鵪 (ān)” and “安 (ān)” (both meaning peace), and “菊 (jú)” and “居 (jū)” (meaning chrysanthemum and residence), together imply “peaceful and prosperous life.”
