Wang Tingjue (1885-1977), also known as Zisun, and by his aliases Canglang Waishi, Chaiweng, Moyin Shizhu, Banmuyuanzhu, and Chengyintangzhu. His ancestral home was Wuxian, Jiangsu. He was also known as Canglang Waishi, Kezhuo Xuanzhu, and in his later years, Chaiweng. A native of Suzhou, he studied under Wu Changshuo and Wang Yiting, among others. He participated in art associations with his teachers, including the Haishang Tijinguan Calligraphy and Painting Association, the Chinese Painting Research Association, and the Daguan Yaji Calligraphy and Painting Association. He excelled at painting birds and flowers, with bold and unrestrained strokes, prevailing through momentum, capturing the spirit of Baiyang and Bada. He was particularly skilled at painting chrysanthemums, and gained great renown during the Republic of China era. His chrysanthemum paintings were ancient, simple, and elegant, earning him the reputation of "Wang's Chrysanthemums." His calligraphy was skilled in seal script and clerical script, exhibiting a vast and antique elegance. During the Republican era, he made a living by selling paintings and writings in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai areas, holding many solo exhibitions. He also excelled in poetry, with works such as "Canglang Waishi Calligraphy and Painting Fan Album" and "Selected Poems of Canglang Waishi." He also conducted professional research on language, and authored "Practical Shanghai Dialect."
