Inscription: Treasured by Runzhi. This piece features a gilt rim, an arched belly, and a ring foot. The exterior of the bowl is adorned with underglaze blue and overglaze enamel, depicting two crabs nestled in a stream, with reeds growing along the bank. The painting conveys a tranquil yet vibrant artistic mood, and the crabs are meticulously realistic and lively, full of scholarly charm, reminiscent of the autumn crab paintings often created by Xu Wei, a painter from the Ming Dynasty. Crabs have shells, and 'reed' (芦苇 lúwěi) is a homophone for 'lú' (胪), hence two crabs with reeds symbolize 'Erjia Chuanlu' (二甲传胪). The 'History of Ming: Records of Elections' states: 'The first place in the imperial examination (Huishi) was called Huiyuan, and the first place in the second class (Erjia) was called Chuanlu.' Erjia Chuanlu therefore signifies a wish for success in the imperial examinations, and crabs and reeds have thus become beloved auspicious motifs in Chinese art.
