This jade ornament uses openwork techniques to carve three monkeys of varying sizes. The mother monkey scratches its head and ears, with a young monkey in her arms crying for food, and another monkey by her side. Parts of it are brownish-red. It symbolizes family reunion. The sound of "monkey" (hou) is homophonous with "marquis" (hou), so it can represent successive generations of marquises, or it can be interpreted as a spirit monkey offering auspiciousness or an immortal monkey bestowing longevity.
