The carved lacquer cup has a撇口 (a slightly everted rim), an arc-shaped belly that tapers inward at the base, a ring foot, and a silver inlay inside the bowl. The carved lacquer technique involves first applying several coats of black lacquer to a wooden base, followed by several coats of red lacquer, repeating this process until the desired thickness is achieved. Then, auspicious cloud head patterns are carved, revealing several layers of red lacquer within the dark, deep cuts, a technique described in the《髹饰录》(Record of Lacquerware) as “black between red lines”. Carved lacquerware is characterized by its thick, lustrous layers of lacquer, and the carving is full and smooth, showcasing the unique charm of line art.
