Chicken Cup with Doucai Decoration, Ming Chenghua Period

Category:
The Chenghua Doucai Chicken Cup is an artistic treasure of traditional Han Chinese ceramics, belonging to the imperial wine cup of the Ming Dynasty Emperor Chenghua. On the outer wall of a shallow-mouthed, footed bowl with a diameter of approximately eight centimeters, the outlines of the design are first lightly sketched with blue and white underglaze lines. Then, it is glazed and fired in a kiln at a high temperature of around 1300 degrees Celsius to form the body. Red, green, and yellow colors are then used to fill in the reserved blue and white design areas, and it is fired again at a low temperature. The outer wall is divided into two sections by peony and orchid-shaped rocks. One section depicts a proud rooster, a hen, and a chick pecking at a centipede, with two other chicks playing. The other section shows a rooster crowing, a hen, and three chicks pecking at a centipede. The scenes are vivid and lively, and many imitations have been made throughout history.
