Author: Sha Qi, originally named Yinnian, also known as Xianchang, courtesy name Jiliu, was born in Shacun, Yin County, Zhejiang Province in 1914. He was a member of the Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History during his lifetime. His father, Sha Songshou, courtesy name Zifu, studied traditional Chinese medicine and surgery from Sha Kezhuang (Sha Menghai's father, his clan brother) when he was young. Over the years, he practiced medicine, engaged in business, taught, and was skilled in Chinese landscape painting. His mother, Ms. Du, gave birth to two daughters and one son. Sha Qi was weak and sickly in his childhood, had average grades in private school, was introverted by nature, but loved painting, showing his artistic talent from a young age. He is a legendary Chinese painter.
He is not only an artist who should not be forgotten by society, but also a brilliant comet in the history of modern Chinese oil painting, adding a dazzling glow to the oil painting art scene. In 1937, Sha Qi studied painting under Mr. Xu Beihong, and in the same year, he was introduced by Xu Beihong to further his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium, learning from painter ABastien. Sha Qi studied painting for nine years in his early years at Shanghai Changming Art School, Shanghai Art College, Hangzhou Art College, and the Central University Art Department. In 1937, he was recommended by Xu Beihong to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. Under the guidance of President Bastien, a new realist painter, Sha Qi systematically studied traditional European painting, won the “Excellent Art Gold Award” with outstanding achievements, and held exhibitions with Picasso and other famous modern painters, once becoming a quite influential local painter.
